CannesFilmFestival_095.jpgToday we drove down to Cannes for the Festival de Cannes. The drive down there was beautiful as always. When we got there, I expected a lot of traffic but was pleasantly surprised. I guess we got there so early that no one was awake yet. We parked at the public parking lot at the train station and walked down into town. On the way, we stopped at a little restaurant and had breakfast – croissants, a bagette, coffee. When we got down to the beach area – la Croisette – the people were just starting to awake from what I can only imagine was a night of drinking, eating, and general revelry.

We walked around, stopped for ice cream, gawked at the stars, and marveled at the entourages. Then, we decided to go over to the Grand Palais where the red carpet is. We were just hanging around when a woman walked up to Carolyn and asked her if she wanted a ticket to one of the premiers. Carolyn took the ticket, and asked if there was some place we could get a second ticket. The woman told us that we could hang out by the entrance to the Grand Palais and just ask people. So we did.

We actually got free passes to a premier of a movie about mennonites living in Mexico. It was directed by a spanish director, Carlos Reygadas. The movie is called Stellet Licht. It was very interesting. The acting was superb, and the story was compelling. I was surprised. One of the really cool things is that the movie was screened in the main theater, so we got to walk up the Red Carpet and into the Grand Palais. Way cool!!

We were there for two premiers -- a French movie by Julian Schnabel called Le Schphandre et le Papillon and Quinten Tarantino's movie Death Proof. Schnabel's movie brought out everyone who is anyone in the French cinema. And, of course, Tarantino brought out everyone from Hollywood – Kurt Russell, Goldie Hawn, Robert Rodriguez, Rose McGowen, Rosario Dawson, Mickey Rourke, Sharon Stone, Harvey Weinstein, and many more.

Here's the photos of our day in Cannes. There's so many pictures that I didn't put captions on them, so just enjoy the pictures of the stars.

All in all, it was a very good day. Until next time…

Put this one in the "fun" category, MSN having itself a bit of fun pushing their latest warez using a supporting cast of Brian Baumgartner of NBC's "The Office" and four plucky harmonizers: It's worth noting that while the Society in no way endorses the use of MSN products themselves, we do happily endorse the inclusion of four-part harmony to help sell said products. Enjoy!

Every August, the Barbershop Harmony Society holds Harmony University, a weeklong music education workshop, on campus. I decided it was time to find out a litlle bit more about the hundreds of barbershop Quartet members who descend on Missouri Western every summer and entertain us in four-part harmony while we work. So I arranged to shadow a Harmony U. attendee, and at 8:30 a.m. on Thursday, Aug. 4. the fifth day of the workshop, I lound myself sitting in on their general session in the Potter Hall theater. I've been to a lot of conferences and workshops before. But...
