It's Carolyn's birthday on Tuesday, and here's what she has to say about this trip:

Well, 14 hrs to GO. We leave for Kauai, Hawaii in the morning. I can't believe it's been a year in the making – my 60th birthday celebration. The year has flown. If you've been reading the blog on my business website, www.mariposapsychotherapy.com, you know that it took me 10 months to make a decision about how I wanted to celebrate and you know why.

To keep up with the happenings in Kauai, Randy has done this nifty blog. He'll be writing and posting pictures and videos most days. I'll be writing off and on.

Tuesday, Dec 30, the actual day of my birthday we'll be taking an airplane (4 seater) ride over the island. The pictures should be spectacular. After the plane ride, we're going to the spa at the Hyatt for massages, then to the Seaside Terrace at the Hyatt for Happy Hour at sunset where they have the traditional torch lighting ceremony. Then we'll be going to the Tidepools Restaurant at the Hyatt for dinner. I'll steal their description,

Open air hale pili (thatched huts) with waterfalls and koi-filled lagoons create a charming rustin scene.

All of that in one day should be enough of a diversion to keep me from fretting over turning 60.

The last few days have been crazy between getting ready for Christmas, having Christmas and then getting ready for the trip. And, to boot, Randy got a cold yesterday, and I'm afraid I may be getting it, too. (You should see our stash of drugs for the flight to Kauai.) Thank you to all of you who called, wrote and/or sent gifts for Christmas and my birthday. I wanted to call everyone before I left, but just haven't had time to get to everyone. Thanks to all.

Love,
Carolyn

Randy's Comments

If you haven't read Carolyn's blog, you really should check it out. She's been blogging all year about turning 60. It's quite insightful.

Graphic depiction of the Hawaiian IslandsAs Carolyn said, we leave Austin tomorrow morning at 10:55am, fly to Las Angeles, and then on to Kauai. I'm really looking forward to the trip, and I'm not about to let a little head cold stop me from having fun.

We'll be staying on Kauai. As you can see, it's right near the end of the island chain, and it's supposed to be the most beautiful island. Just to whet your appetite, here's a sample of some of the things we'll be seeing.

So, stay tuned for more pictures and YouTube videos of our trip.

Until next time

Put this one in the "fun" category, MSN having itself a bit of fun pushing their latest warez using a supporting cast of Brian Baumgartner of NBC's "The Office" and four plucky harmonizers: It's worth noting that while the Society in no way endorses the use of MSN products themselves, we do happily endorse the inclusion of four-part harmony to help sell said products. Enjoy!

Every August, the Barbershop Harmony Society holds Harmony University, a weeklong music education workshop, on campus. I decided it was time to find out a litlle bit more about the hundreds of barbershop Quartet members who descend on Missouri Western every summer and entertain us in four-part harmony while we work. So I arranged to shadow a Harmony U. attendee, and at 8:30 a.m. on Thursday, Aug. 4. the fifth day of the workshop, I lound myself sitting in on their general session in the Potter Hall theater. I've been to a lot of conferences and workshops before. But...
