Waimea Canyon – WOW!

January 05 2009 by Randy Martin

On Saturday, we drove up to the top of the ridge of Waimea Canyon — The Grand Canyon of Hawaii. The canyon is about 17 miles long and about 3700 feet deep. It was made by an earthquake with the help of the Waimea River. The drive up to the top lookout point is really spectacular. I've got plenty of pictures and several videos that I'll post when I get back to Austin.

Here's a slideshow of the trip up the canyon.

Yesterday we drove up the north coast to Princeville, Hannalai (yes, the same Hannalai from the Puff-The-Magic-Dragon song — in fact, there is a landmark in the mountains called the dragon by the sea. I guess that's where Peter Yarrow got the idea for the song), and then on to Kee (pronounced Kay-aay) beach. Wait until you see the pictures of this! Unbelievable! I almost couldn't get Carolyn to get back into the car and leave.

This will be my last post until we get home. It's a little after 6:00pm on Monday here. Our flight leaves at 10:05pm — the Red Eye! We get into LA at 5:20am Tuesday morning and will be back in Austin about 11:30am.

I'll do my best to get the rest of the pictures and all the videos posted by the end of the week-end. There are some really great stuff to see.

We're ready to be home — but not! You know the feeling. We miss everyone, but really don't want to leave. Next time we come to Hawaii, I want to see the other islands. Maybe we can stay longer than a week and see all the other islands. That would be a great trip.

Later…
